A Flowery Community Celebration – La Fiesta de Salsa

Do you know what Flowery does at the end of every September? We’ll give you a hint: it involves food, music and fun.  Give up? Well, it’s the Salsa Party!

This is the eleventh year of Flowery doing the Salsa Party. The Salsa Party is a time when parents, teachers, students and friends get together to make salsa and have fun. We celebrate it in honor of the harvest in Flowery’s garden, the beginning of a new school year and Hispanic Heritage month.

The Salsa Party began in 1996, two years after the garden was started. Kate Ortolano, our garden coordinator, and Bob Gossett, our music teacher, started growing ingredients for salsa. A friend of theirs decided to use the salsa and have a party. There were three different kinds of salsa – mild, medium and hot (¡muy picante!). The first year 10 people came. The next year other people found out, and 40 people came. Each year the number of people increased. This year there were close to 400 people! The idea of the party is to have people make their own salsa, and if they want, take it home.

The latest celebration of the Salsa Party took place Friday, September 28 from 5:00 until 8:00 in Flowery’s garden. Tens of parents, children, teachers and friends got together to chop vegetables for the salsa. The vegetables came from the garden, donations and friends. Other parents barbequed corn, turkey legs and sausages, while many other families donated food for the potluck. Hundreds of people came to have fun and enjoy Flowery’s delicious salsa.

Everyone agreed that both the party and the salsa were equally HOT!

Una Celebración de la Comunidad de Flowery – La Fiesta de Salsa

¿Sabe usted lo que hace Flowery al final de cada mes de septiembre? Nosotros le daremos una pista: hay comida, música y diversión. ¿Se da por vencido? Bueno, pues se trata de la Fiesta de Salsa.

Este es el décimo primer año en que Flowery hace la Fiesta de Salsa. La Fiesta de Salsa es un tiempo cuando los padres, maestros, estudiantes, y amigos se reúnen para hacer salsa y divertirse. Nosotros celebramos en honor de la cosecha del jardín de Flowery, el principio del ciclo escolar nuevo y el mes de la herencia hispana.  

La Fiesta de Salsa empezó en 1996, dos años después de haber empezado el jardín. Kate Ortolano, nuestra coordinadora del jardín, y Bob Gossett, nuestro maestro de música, empezaron a cosechar ingredientes para la salsa. Un amigo de ellos decidió usar la salsa y hacer una fiesta. Había tres clases de salsa diferente – no picante, mediana, y muy picante. El primer año vinieron 10 personas. El año siguiente las personas se dieron cuenta y vinieron 40 en total. Cada año crece el número de personas que asisten. Este año nosotros tuvimos la asistencia de aproximadamente 400 personas. La idea de la fiesta es que las personas hagan su propia salsa, y si ellos quieren, la pueden llevar a su casa.

La última celebración de la Fiesta de Salsa se llevo a cabo el viernes, 28 de septiembre de 5:00 a 8:00 en el jardín de Flowery. Decenas de padres, niños, maestros y amistades se reunieron para picar vegetales para la salsa. Los vegetales se adquirieron del jardín, donaciones y amistades. Otros padres de familia asaron elotes, piernas de pavo, y salchichones, mientras que otras familias donaron comida para la fiesta. Cientos de personas vinieron a divertirse y disfrutar de la salsa deliciosa de Flowery.
